Why
Why landscapers use it
- Dense, glossy leaves make a solid privacy screen.
- Handles South Florida heat and sun.
- A common replacement for ficus hedges since the ficus whitefly reached Miami-Dade in 2007.
- 15- and 25-gallon plants give an instant hedge with fewer plants.
Spacing and the Miami-Dade code
Miami-Dade's landscape code (Chapter 18A) asks for hedge plants 30 inches apart or closer, or up to 48 inches apart if the plants are at least 36 inches tall, and for the hedge to form a solid screen within a year. Fuller 15- and 25-gallon plants get you there sooner.
Work out how many plants you need. Always check the rules for your city and permit.

Good to know
Not native
Small-leaf clusia (Clusia guttifera) is not a Florida native. The native species is Clusia rosea, a much larger plant that is often sold under the wrong name. If your project needs native plants, ask us.
Not invasive
No clusia is on Florida's invasive plant lists.
Pests
Scale insects are the main pest to watch for on clusia.
Cold
Hard freezes damage clusia. For colder spots, consider podocarpus.
