Podocarpus

Why

Why buyers choose it

  • Takes cold far better than clusia: a safer pick after the February 2026 freeze.
  • Upright and narrow, so it fits tight spaces along walls, fences and driveways.
  • Fine, dense leaves take regular shearing for a neat, formal hedge.
  • Grows in full sun or part shade.

Built for cold snaps

UF/IFAS lists podocarpus as hardy down to USDA zone 7, far colder than South Florida gets. Hard freezes damage clusia: in the February 2026 cold snap, some nurseries lost thousands. Podocarpus is the safer pick for exposed or low-lying spots.

It also grows well in our Redland heat (zone 10b), as our own rows show.

Straight talk

Good to know

  • Slower than clusia

Buy close to the height you need. 15-gallon plants give the quickest screen.

  • Older leaves turning yellow

On sandy or alkaline soil, podocarpus can run short of magnesium. Magnesium sulfate usually fixes it.

  • Pests

Podocarpus sometimes gets scale, mites or sooty mold. Check new plants and treat early.

  • Needs good drainage

Podocarpus doesn't like wet feet. Plant it where water drains and don't overwater: soggy soil rots the roots.

Questions

Podocarpus questions

Which hedge handles cold better?
Podocarpus. UF/IFAS lists podocarpus as hardy down to USDA zone 7, far colder than clusia tolerates. For exposed or low-lying spots that get frost, it's the safer pick.
Why are my podocarpus leaves turning yellow?
If it's the older leaves, on sandy or alkaline soil it's usually a magnesium shortage, and magnesium sulfate fixes it. Check the watering too: soggy soil damages the roots. New growth comes in a lighter green, and that's normal.
Can I mix sizes and plants in one order?
Yes. Every plant in the order counts toward the volume price, so 30 clusia and 25 podocarpus get the 50+ price.
How does volume pricing work?
There are three price levels: 1–9, 10–49, 50+ plants. The count includes every plant in the order, of any size.
Do you sell to homeowners?
Yes. Anyone can buy at our prices and pick up free at the farm.
